Friends of Redcar Cemetery
Location: Redcar and Cleveland, United Kingdom
The Hope project will be the first of 3 features (Faith, Hope and Love)in the active working section of Redcar Cemetery. The 3 features will link with the newly established Peace Path and Peace Plaques (images attached) which were completed in June 2016. The new Peace Path has 5 plaques along it’s length each with a well known peace quote.
The Hope project consists of a 2 metre high oak sculpture, hand carved in relief, portraying a grandparent and child planting a tree, with a robin on the spade. (image attached). We took the inspiration from a number of similar sentiments that portray planting as an image of hopeThe sculpture will be set within a circular flower bed. The bed will be planted with blue iris, a symbol of hope. Images of this associated flower will also be carved on the reverse side of the sculpture. The sculptor will be a local artist who has done several popular wood sculptures in the area. Most notably in New Marske woods and our own Redcar Cemetery Tulip Tree sculpture (image attached).
To inform visitors, there will be an interpretation board on the approach to the sculpture, which will link the hope element and how it fits in with the Faith, Hope and Love theme. The board will also incorporate the names of the project funders.
To complete the project there will be a paved walkway from the main cemetery thoroughfare leading up to and encircling the Hope sculpture. The walkway paving will complement the recently laid Peace Path.
The main purpose of the project is as a response to the feedback of the local community and Friends group. The Hope project will provide further comfort, solace and reassurance to individuals and members of the Friends group paying their respects to their loved ones.
It will further enhance the visitors sense of wellbeing especially the newly bereaved. It also makes the cemetery a more appealing place to visit for families with younger children.
The paved walkway will enhance safety and accessibility in the active working section of the cemetery and lifts the overall appearance of the area.
A improved and well maintained cemetery encourages respect and reduces incidences of vandalism and anti social behaviour.
On project completion, the Friends group are to invite local year 6 schoolchildren to photograph and design entrance plaques to the 3 sections of the cemetery, incorporating the new features in each section. This was initially undertaken in 2011.
Further improvements sustain the Friends groups enthusiasm and are a means of attracting more members
